Car Dealership – Tacoma, WA
Roof Collapse Investigation
A large portion of the roof of the car dealership collapsed during the snowstorm that occurred in Tacoma, Washington in January 2012. The roof trusses in the building were constructed with heavy timber members and steel rods. The collapse was precipitated by a tension failure of the bottom chord at weak splice connection. We have found similar failures in many heavy timber roofs. A common mistake in the original design of these older roofs is underestimating the tension load in the truss bottom chord.
